Work Experience Afternoon Tea – Thank You for Supporting Regent College Learners

On Thursday, June 29, we had the pleasure of joining a group of passionate learners from Regent College as they hosted a very professional afternoon tea event.

The gathering served as a thank you to the valued work experience/volunteering providers who have offered placements to the learners over the past few years.

Learners Jessica B,  Jessica C, Jonathon, and Thomas, are in their final year of studies. Sam C and Sam F are both returning in September 2023 and are set to complete their AIM qualification in July 2024.

Collaborating closely with their tutors, they took charge of organising and delivering this milestone event, which took place at the Apedale Energy Centre in Newcastle, Stoke-on-Trent.

They were joined by former learners, Danielle and Kirsty, who have both sustained their work and volunteering placements post-college.  It was great to see how confident and proud they are of their achievements.

Kirsty's Success Story

We had the opportunity to speak with Kirsty, who had previously completed a study programme, which included a hospitality unit at Regent College.

She shared her inspiring journey, saying, “Thanks to my work experience placements during my time at the college, I now hold two jobs. I am employed at Bread in Common bakery and café, as well as Fenton Town Hall Café. Among my roles, I particularly enjoy food preparation, especially baking cakes.”

Work Experience Providers Making a Difference

Michelle Folkes and Tracey Roden from Scrap Shack pictured above with Kirsty, located in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, have been offering valuable work experience placements to Regent College learners for the past five years.

Scrap Shack is a remarkable not-for-profit organisation dedicated to reducing waste destined for landfills. They repurpose various materials and sell them in their scrap store.

Learners from Regent College play a pivotal role in organising the donated materials, involving tasks such as counting, packing, and pricing items for resale.

The Inspiring Journey of James

A particular success story from Scrap Shack involves James, a former learner who achieved a volunteer role with them for three years after completing his work experience placement.

James initially struggled with verbal communication, but thanks to his time volunteering, his confidence and skills blossomed. He eventually began communicating with words—a remarkable transformation.

Petrina, one of the Work Experience Co-ordinators for Regent College, expressed immense pride in the learners and their collaborative efforts in organising this memorable event.

She stated, “I’m truly proud of our learners and the way they have showcased the skills they’ve acquired over the past few years.

We are always seeking new partners to provide our learners with valuable work experience opportunities. We want more local employers to know how rewarding and impactful it can be to offer our bright young adults their first step into the workplace.”
